In the crypto world, Airdrop is a common practice that involves sending crypto incentives to the wallet addresses of community members. The purpose is to reward early adopters of the project, or to promote crypto and raise awareness by encouraging users to perform certain tasks.
Simply put, Airdrops are free giveaways where users can earn profits for free or gain more returns on a small investment. And this is where scammers come in. They use fake airdrops to cheat victims of their assets, taking advantage of those who are hoping to get "free money".
Here are some common scam tactics:
1. Scammers are likely to pose as customer support, and send QR codes or links to users on social media channels to promote free airdrops. When users scan the QR code or click the link to grant permission, the scammers are also given access to their wallets and therefore can steal their assets easily.
2. Some users will find free airdrops distributed to their address automatically, even though they didn't participate in any airdrop events. When checking the transaction details, they will see a link in the memo field and a notice that says the token can be swapped to other cryptos. If a user attempts a token swap through the given link, the scam site will maliciously ask for wallet access. Once the users grant permission, the assets in this wallet will be stolen right away.
Security tips:
- DO NOT click unknown links or grant permission to unknown sites. Once transferred out, your assets CANNOT be recovered.
- Official customer support will NEVER send you direct messages first.
- Verify on multiple channels to ensure the airdrop event is authentic before participating.
